“Waiting patiently doesn't suit you. I
can see you have a great deal of water in your personality. Water never waits.
It changes shape and flows around things, and finds the secret paths no one
else has thought about.”
- Mameha to Chiyo (Sayuri)
In my opinion, this quote is quite important, which shaped Chiyo into Sayuri and paved her onto the path of being a geisha. As this quote really fueled and push started Sayuri's career. As her mentor and "older sister" teaches that with her personality she should not try to force herself to be someone and that if she just acts herself, she will be lead to precious gems and secrets.
Quote #2
“Can't you see? Every step I have taken,
since I was that child on the bridge, has been to bring myself closer to you. ”
- Chiyo (Sayuri) to the Chairman (Iwamura Ken)
This quote is even more important that Quote #1 as this quote is what's being said at the climax of the whole book. Chiyo/Sayuri finally said this to the chairman as she confessed her feeling for him throughout all those years. And said that every step she has taken to become a geisha, to live since the day she met him on the bridge was to bring herself closer to him.
Connecting to Theme
A theme that is quite prominent through out the whole book would be "things aren't always as they appear" and the second quote represents the theme quite well. As the quote is when Sayuri confesses to the chairman and tells him that every thing that she has done so far was not just for the sake of doing them. Instead she did them to be able to get closer to the chairman as she loved him.
