Link to Other Works

The book Memoirs of a Geisha has many qualities that make it quite similar compared to Lord of the Flies.

For example, the protagonist and antagonist, were both living to survive and eventually got stronger through experiences when being forced to sustain in that situation.

In Memoirs of a Geisha, Chiyo was sold to the okiya at a very young age and was forced to learn to survive on her own. Not physically did she have to learn but mentally. She had to convince herself that staying in the okiya was her only option and if she tried to run away she wouldn't be able to survive. Just like Ralph in Lord of the Flies, her main objective was to survive, and then she could do whatever she wanted to do.
Surviving in the wild and surviving in the cruel world of geisha were similar too.

In the wild, one would encounter many wild animals they may have never seen and are most probably too scared to interact with. In the world of geisha, there are many geishas who debut and try to become famous (not an easy task) since during that time period Hatsumomo was one of the most famous geisha in Gion and with Sayuri's potential, Hatsumomo got scared that her spot may be in danger and did whatever possible to bring hell to the little girl's life. For little Chiyo this was the first animal she had encountered and the animal planned and executed many attacks that made Chiyo fall of her tracks but Chiyo was persistent and strong so she was able to endure all the damage and become the best geisha in Gion.
